About This Tour

Mentok Kangri is an ideal option for the trekking & climber aficionados who want to discover the pristine beauty of Himalayas. Perched in the spellbinding region of Rupshu Valley, this elevated and barren panorama attracts the imaginations of travellers from all around the blue planet. Mentok is a Tibetan name of a wild flower native to this region. The trail takes the traveller through secluded valleys, rustic villages and hilltop monasteries. The trekkers have to low-angle snow on the way.

This 15 night and 16 days itinerary includes trekking & climbing to Mentok Kangri in a comprehensive and heartwarming way. The trail comprises of exploring beautiful regions such as Khardung La, Rumptse, Kyamar, Tisaling, Nuruchan, etc. This trek can also be carried out by a beginner trekker. However, a bit of technique is required for this ascent.

Itinerary

Early in the morning catch a spectacular flight to Leh. On arrival at Leh airport, meet & greet by our Ladakhi representative who will transfer you to your pre-booked hotel. Check in at the hotel. The rest of the day is free to get acclimatised. In the evening, you can roam in the colourful Leh market. An overnight stay in the hotel.

In the morning after breakfast, we will visit some of the ancient monasteries in this area including Shey, Thiksey and Hemis. After visiting these monasteries return back to the hotel for an overnight stay. The Shey Gompa is about 15 kms from Leh. It used to be the summer palace of the kings of Ladakh. There are lots of Stupas and Gompas built around the palace. Shey palace was built by Deldan Namgyal in the beginning of 17’Th century AD. Main attraction in Shey is the 12m Shakyamuni Buddha statue inside the Dresthang Gompa. Thiksey Gompa, close to Shey is about 17 kms from Leh. The monastery is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Ladakh and belongs to the Gelukspa order. Hemis, about 45 kms south of Leh it is one of the most famous and largest monastery in Ladakh. It belongs to the Drukpa order and was founded in the early 17’Th century. The setting is perfect with the monastery cradled in a lovely valley, surrounded by streams and fronted by long Mani walls.

After breakfast in the morning, we will drive north of Leh up to Khardung La. (Mountain Pass at 5570 m/18380 ft.). It is supposed to be the highest motorable road not only in India but in the world. After exploring the area, we will drive back to Leh by afternoon. In the evening, one can walk on Leh Market for a last minute shopping. An overnight stay in the hotel.

Today, we will drop you to the Rumptse by Taxi. There will be a formal introduction with the experienced trekking guide at Rumptse. We will trek to Kyamar (4420 m) in 4 h. Thereafter, we will enter a magnificent and vast area, where the Changpas - nomadic herders take their yak to pasture. Further, we will follow the ancient salt trade route along the green Kyamar valley. Enjoy an overnight stay in Kyamar.

In the morning, we will start through beautiful colour gorge towards Chorten Sumda. We will proceed for an easy walk of one hour then ascend towards Kumur La. From the top, you can witness the beautiful view of the chain of Kangyatse (6400 Mtrs ) and the chain of other mountain ranges.

Today, we will proceed to Pangunagu (4800 m), which is a 5 hour journey in the morning. From the pass, we will get a panoramic view of the Tsokhar Lake (4400m) and the Rupshu valley. Then descend towards the lake, from where the nomads collect salt from the Tsokar lake. The lake was the only source of salt in Ladakh region. We will camp near the winter camp of nomad of Changthang and enjoy an overnight stay.

We will proceed from Pangunagu to Nuruchan (4630 m), which will be a 5 hour journey. Today, we will have an easy trek along the lake. Tsokar area has the vast area of wet land where you can see lots of Migratory birds come here for the breeding in summer. On the way, you can also see Wild ass (Kyang) of Ladakh and Tibet plateau. At the end of the lake, the trail goes right and enters the Nuruchan village.

We will visit Rajungkaru in the morning today, which is about 4 to 5 hrs long journey. It is an easy walking by the side of river. Here, we will camp a little before the camps of nomads as they keep very aggressive dogs along with them. It is a nice camping area where you can take pleasure of a comfy stay in camps.

Today, we will reach Gyamabarma, which is again 5 hrs long journey. On the way, we will cross Kyamayuri la ( 5300 Mtrs ) and reach to broad valley then to Gyamabarma, where we can find nomad camp.

Today, we will reach Korzok in 7 hrs by crossing the yalung nyau la (5400 Mtrs ). From the top of pass, you can see the beautiful and heart-throbbing panoramic view of high-altitude fresh water of Tsomoriri Lake. After steep descending, we will reach to Korzok phu where you can see the biggest nomad camp, which is also called Head Quarter of Changpas. After one and half hour walk, we will reach to Korzok Village, situated on the bank of Tsomoriri Lake.

After breakfast in the morning, we will gradually trek to the base camp of Mentok Kangri at 5400 Mtrs, which will take about 6 Hrs. An overnight stay in the base camp.

In the morning, we will proceed to a lovely peak on a long ridge running south of the Korzok village to the shore of the Tsomoriri Lake. Mentok in Ladakhi language means FLOWERS, in summer, the Korzok valley blooms with wild medicinal flowers justifying the name of its peak. When you reach to summit, you will get to see a magnificent and heart throbbing view of entire Changthang region. Later, we will descent back to the base camp for a night stay.

After breakfast in the morning, we will descent back to the Korzok. Enjoy an overnight stay in tents.

In the morning after breakfast, we will travel back to Leh. An overnight stay in the hotel in Leh.

Early in the morning after breakfast, we will have final departure from Leh to onward destination. End of the tour and services.
