RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR TRAVELLING
Travel with a Registered Agency is Mandatory
Independent travel is not permitted in the Tibet Autonomous Region. All international visitors must book through a licensed Tibetan travel agency that arranges your Tibet Travel Permit, private guide, and vehicle.
Tibet Travel Permit Required
A Tibet Travel Permit (often called a Tibet Visa) is required to enter Tibet by train, flight, or overland from Nepal. Your agency applies for this after securing your Chinese visa and passport details. Permit processing takes 18–30 days, so advance planning is essential.
Additional Permits for Restricted Regions
Beyond Lhasa, you may need extra permits:
- Alien Travel Permit (e.g., Shigatse, Everest Base Camp)
- Border Permit (e.g., Mount Kailash, border zones)
- Military Permit (e.g., Ngari, Nyingchi, or Xinjiang routes)
All of these are arranged by your travel agency.
Entry Points: China or Nepal
Travelers can only enter Tibet from other Chinese cities or Nepal. A Chinese Group Visa is required when entering from Nepal, your regular Chinese visa will be voided. This visa takes three business days and must be processed through an authorized agency in Kathmandu.
Visa-Free Entry Policy
China currently allows visa-free travel for citizens of 56 countries. However, even with this benefit, a Tibet Travel Permit is still required.
Diplomats and Journalists
Tibet travel for diplomats or journalists must be arranged through official government channels. Regular travel agencies cannot assist with these visits.
Tibet Closes Annually (Feb–March)
Tibet is typically closed to international tourists from late February to March for administrative maintenance and local holidays. Travel permits are not issued during this period.
Restricted Areas
Some areas remain closed to foreign visitors due to sensitivity, including Lhamo Lha-Tso, Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, Pangong Lake (Tibet side), and others. We’ll help ensure your itinerary complies with all regulations.
Kailash Yatra for Indian Pilgrims
Indian passport holders must register via the Indian Ministry of External Affairs or approved Kailash Yatra agencies. We offer special Kailash tour arrangements for NRIs and group pilgrimages.
Private Tours Are Allowed
Group tours are not mandatory, as long as your tour is arranged through a certified agency with proper permits, you may travel solo or with your own group on a private tour, ideal for a personalized experience.
