Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra – Gearing up Adventure and Religion Equally

The Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra in Uttarakhand is the most celebrated event in the whole Garhwal region. One of the most sacred and famous pilgrimage in the high Himalayan mountains which is being inculcated with tremendous ancient faiths and beliefs with the immense believe in Goddess Nanda Devi (Wife of Lord Shiva). The Goddess which is being considered as the Isht Devi (Most Devoted Goddess of Garhwal region people) of the region and so the local folks and the royal family of Uttarakhand worship her to please their Isht Devi.

Like Kumbh Mela in India, the Nanda Devi Raaj Jat Yatra also commences at every 12 years and the large amount of pilgrims are expected to join this sacred venture which is being followed by tough trekking of 280 km that begins from the village Nauti at Chamoli district in Uttarakhand. The Yatra determines the beauty of the landscapes and the traditions of the Himalayan valleys and reflects the deep faith and reverence for Nanda Devi and respect for including few villages as well as some meadows of the Himalaya.

The captivating part of this trekking is that the four horned Ram which is considered being sacred at this region is well-decorated with vermillion marks and laden with Prasads, clothes and ornaments to it and is being carried away throughout the march. Later at Home Kund, the four horned Ram suddenly disappears from the devotees’ sights, which is believed to be received by the Goddess herself. The idol of Nanda Devi which is carried throughout the journey is being decorated with new clothes and ornaments like a new bride and the Prasads and offerings are offered to her as a form of worship.

This 22 day long trekking welcomes all at the border village of Wan from where the pilgrims move towards the real adventurous journey. On this Yatra one can explore the Himalayan peaks, lush green meadows, murmuring waterfalls, crystal clear lake and many more… along with the changing colors of the environment and the landscapes making a proud feeling of staying at the heaven. On the last day of the trek, the 22nd day which is called the Nandashtami, the pilgrims give farewell to the Goddess at Nauti Village.
