The town lies on the Rishikesh to Badrinath route about 87 kms from Narendra Nagar. There are suspension bridges on the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda. It is also the seat of the pandas (priests) of the Badrinath Dham.
It is believed that the town is named after Deosharma, a sage, who led a life of penance here and succeeded in having a glimpse of God. Devprayag, meaning "holy confluence", is essentially the site of the beginning of the Ganges River. The Ganges begins with the confluence of two streams here, and its considered a place of powerful natural forces as well as spiritual forces. Devprayag is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrimages.
Religious ablutions take place at two basins excavated in the rock at the junction of the holy streams. One on the Bhagirathi known as the Braham Kund and the other on the Alaknanda called the Vashisth Kund.

The meeting of the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers has a unique beauty of its own and it seems as if two sisters were embracing each other. It is believed that to master the mysteries of music, Narad Muni worshipped Lord Shiva, who appeared in his Rudra Avatar (incarnation) to bless Narad. The Shiva and Jagdamba temples are of great religious importance.
Till recently, Rudraprayag was a part of district Chamoli and Tehri. In 1997, the Kedarnath Valley and parts of district Tehri & Pauri were conjoined to form Rudraprayag as a new district.

After the Kedarnath temple closes for the winter, a movable image of Kedarnath is brought in procession to Ukhimath, where it resides until the Kedarnath temple reopens in late April or early May.
This picture shows the outer gateway to the temple complex, which is not only brightly painted and decorated, but two full stories tall (the wall also serves as the back wall of buildings inside). The stones piled at lower left were for some sort of construction project, which was in full swing when I visited (since summer is the "slow" season ritually speaking, it made sense for the place to be torn up them. And the nearby buildings are clearly residential, since a young girl is visible at upper right.
